The Poseidon Athens Half Marathon, the beloved running event for people of all ages, returns revamped for its 15th year! on April 21st, champions and amateur runners from around the world will run the historic Athens Half Marathon and its parallel races, along a beautiful route along the coastal zone of the Faliron Bay, passing through significant points of cultural and historical interest. The starting point and finish line for all races of the 15th Poseidon Half Marathon remains the Sports and Cultural Center of the Municipality of Palaio Faliro.
Proving itself to be the largest running event in Athens for April, the Poseidon this year will host over 5,000 participants, a record number for the event, while more than 7,000 people (runners, companions, staff, volunteers, and friends of the event) are expected to gather at the Palaio Faliro Municipality's Sports and Cultural Center on Sunday, April 21st, confirming that it has established itself in the consciousness of the running community as a beloved event of high standards. Thus, it's no coincidence that enthusiasts from 70 nationalities representing 45 different countries around the world will line up at the race starts. From South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, American Samoa in the Pacific, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, among others, the Poseidon will travel across the planet through the images of its runners. Besides Greece, the largest representation of runners comes from Spain and the UK.
The Poseidon Athens Half Marathon once again becomes the event of the 5 Continents and the 7 Seas!
This year's race program includes six different races with short, medium, and long distances to meet the needs of all runners. The main event of the day is the Half Marathon of 21.1 km, while simultaneously, the Quarter Marathon (1/4) is held on the same route, covering a distance of 10.5 km. Those who want to test their skills in shorter distances have the opportunity to run in the Novo Nordisk 5 km Road Race along the coastal front. At a more relaxed pace, the Novo Nordisk 5 km Dynamic Walking Race takes place on the same route. Also, there's the Social Contribution Race, 1,000 or 2,000 meters long, to support the Pan-Hellenic Association of Adapted Activities "ALMA," for children with intellectual disabilities and autism. For young runners up to 12 years old, there's the 1,000 meters Children's Road Race, which is offered free of charge to introduce them to the world of running.
In the context of continuously improving the services offered to runners, the Poseidon Half Marathon has secured official measurement of the half marathon and 5 km routes, certified by WA/AIMS, and is a regular member of it. Thus, runners can now enjoy the renewed marking of the routes along the southern coastal front of Athens, passing by significant landmarks such as the Battleship Averof, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the Flisvos Marina, and the Alimos Marina, running in an event integrated into the AIMS calendar.
Alongside the racing program of the Poseidon, a series of cultural and social events are unfolding. An integral part of the planning is now the Pan-Hellenic Painting Competition for children aged 4-14, with the theme "Running is a game, it's joy! Running with our friends is even greater joy!" and all the artworks will be exhibited at the race secretariat.
Aligned with modern standards of energy footprint management, the Poseidon Half Marathon "runs" the recycling and surplus water collection action "ECO Environment. Lifestyle!" in collaboration with the "Action Group for the World - Environmental Alliance 2004+" Institute. With the same organization, the voluntary program for reusing sports shoes "Let them run again" is organized, promoted to groups of fellow citizens in need through the social services of the Municipality of Palaio Faliro.
Under the auspices of the Region of Attica, the Municipality of Palaio Faliro, the Municipality of Alimos, the Greek National Tourism Organization, the World Health Organization - Healthy Cities, the Hellenic Diabetes Association, and the Hellenic Police, the races are included in the official program of SEGAS and additionally bear the stamp of the European Union of Sports for All (UESpT).
